ADHD Vitamins

Using what some would call ADHD vitamins as treatment for ADHD seems to be on the rise ever since more and more emphasis has been placed on the role of diet in ADHD. Some medical practitioners recommend supplementing the diet with omega-3 (DHA-Docosahexaenoic Acid) essential fatty acids. This supposedly can help his brain to repair the faulty brain circuitry. The argument given is that children with ADHD often face problems in converting essential fatty acids, and thus by consuming omega-3 can help restore proper fatty acid balance for proper brain development and functions.

The brain uses DHA for growth, function and integrity. Its deficiency is known to impair brain function and mental performance in children. The primary source of this ADHD vitamins is cold-water fatty fish, and it is found in exceptionally high concentrations in tuna oil. Studies  published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that hyperactive children have lower levels of DHA in their blood and supplementation with tuna oil may be a useful treatment.

ADHD vitamins and minerals also include calcium, magnesium or vitamin B complex in the diet. It is said that both calcium and magnesium have a calming effect while B vitamins are needed for correct brain function.

Then there’s organic spirulina which is widely acknowledged as an excellent source of complete protein, beta-carotene, B vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and enzymes. It also contains essential fatty acid, gamma linolenic acid (GLA) found in mother's milk and evening primrose oil.

To “supplement” the effectiveness of ADHD vitamins, some experts recommend staying away from taking stuff such as candy, chocolate, apple cider vinegar, bacon, butter, hot dogs, ham, luncheon meat, milk, margarine, salami, soy sauce, mustard, junk food and all foods that contain artificial colourings, flavourings, preservatives and monosodium glutamate.

Because many diseases suffered by adults in later life have their beginning in childhood, it is important that children have a good ADHD diet that include sufficient amount of ADHD vitamins and minerals, especially DHA. Dietary sources of DHA are limited, but tuna oil provides substantial amounts.

There also exists what is known as natural remedies which claim to be able to help children with ADHD. These natural remedies for ADHD, which use various types of herbs, have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to support the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system. Among the common types of herbs used in preparing these herbal concoctions are Ginkgo Biloba, Skullcap, German chamomile, Gotu cola, and Rooibos).
